What to Know After the Forensic Interview

Who will be following up with me after the interview?

Following the interview, the investigator(s)—which may include representatives from law enforcement, child protection, or both—will typically check in with you on the same day to provide updates regarding the next steps in their investigation. It may be helpful for you to write down any questions or concerns you have regarding the investigation to ask during this time. CornerHouse advocates can also be included in this meeting if you choose.

Who should I communicate with after the interview?

  • CornerHouse Advocate: A CornerHouse advocate will meet with you to provide immediate support on the day of the interview and may continue to offer services afterward. If you choose to work with an advocate they will reach out to you 1-2 weeks post interview. CornerHouse offers a range of services, including individual therapy, support groups, case management, and assistance with navigating the legal system. Your advocate can also facilitate communication between your family and the investigative team as necessary and provide referrals to external agencies that may be helpful.

  • Investigator: Your investigator, whether from law enforcement or child protection or other investigative agency, may have pertinent information regarding the status of the investigation.

  • Physician: In any cases relating to physical or sexual abuse, it is beneficial for your child to see a physician who can check for any potential injuries or infections and provide appropriate treatment as needed. It can also be emotionally healing for children to see a physician and be reassured that their bodies are healthy and normal. In many cases relating to physical or sexual abuse, we recommend seeing a physician who has special training in conducting these pediatric medical exams. Such exams can be requested by you or your investigator if there are concerns regarding your child’s physical or emotional well-being. If your child has not been interviewed at CornerHouse but you have concerns about an injury related to abuse, you may still schedule an appointment with the Center for Safe and Healthy Children.

What do I need to know about the medical exam?

CornerHouse collaborates with the Center for Safe and Healthy Children (CSHC) at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital for these medical examinations. CSHC is committed to providing comprehensive medical care for victims and potential victims of child abuse and neglect. During the examination, your family will meet with both a medical provider and a social worker.

In addition to the medical examination, CSHC offers families support, education, and resources. They specialize in caring for children and adolescents who are victims or possible victims of various forms of maltreatment, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. For any inquiries regarding the Center for Safe and Healthy Children or medical examinations, please contact them at 612-273-7233.
