Stuffy
Meet Stuffy, CornerHouse’s Facility Dog
What Makes Stuffy Special
Stuffy isn't just a friendly dog—he's a highly trained professional who understands the unique needs of children who've experienced trauma. Through Patriot PAWS Service Dogs' rigorous program, Stuffy learned specialized skills like remaining calm in stressful situations, responding to subtle cues from his handler, and providing comfort without being intrusive. His training and consistent presence at CornerHouse make him an integral part of our trauma-informed care team.
Stuffy's Impact
Since joining CornerHouse, Stuffy has touched countless lives—children, families, staff, and our broader community. He's a living reminder that healing doesn't always require words; sometimes it just requires a gentle presence and the unconditional acceptance that only a dog can provide.
Children remember Stuffy long after their visits. He becomes part of their brave story—the part where they found their voice, felt safe enough to tell the truth, and realized they weren't alone.
Stuffy's Role at CornerHouse
As CornerHouse's facility dog, Stuffy works alongside our forensic interviewers, therapists, and family advocates to create a trauma-informed, child-centered environment. His presence helps children feel more comfortable during forensic interviews, gives kids courage to share difficult experiences, welcomes and supports families from the moment they arrive, and helps staff manage the emotional demands of working with trauma.
Stuffy is particularly skilled at helping children with emotional regulation. His calm breathing, soft fur, and gentle presence provide sensory grounding that can help kids feel more in control when everything else feels overwhelming.

Facility dogs like Stuffy aren't just friendly companions—they're specially trained professionals who play a critical role in helping children feel safe enough to share their experiences.
The Research Behind Facility Dogs: According to the Courthouse Dogs Foundation, "Facility dogs help children feel safe enough to disclose what has happened to them, reducing trauma and increasing the chances of obtaining accurate and reliable information."
Research consistently shows that facility dogs:
Reduce anxiety and fear in high-stress environments like forensic interviews
Help children feel more comfortable speaking about difficult experiences
Provide emotional regulation support through their calming presence
Create a sense of safety that allows for more complete and accurate communication
Decrease stress responses both physically (lower heart rate, reduced cortisol) and emotionally
Why It Matters: When children feel safer and calmer, they're better able to communicate what happened to them. This not only supports their healing journey but also helps ensure that accurate information is gathered to protect them and other children. Facility dogs like Stuffy bridge the gap between trauma and trust, offering a non-judgmental presence that helps children find their voice.
Evidence-Based Support: Studies from Children's Advocacy Centers across the country have found that children who interact with facility dogs during forensic interviews often provide more detailed accounts, show reduced signs of distress, and report feeling more comfortable throughout the process. The simple act of petting a dog or having one nearby can make an overwhelming experience feel more manageable.

When children visit CornerHouse, they may be feeling scared, nervous, or overwhelmed. Stuffy's presence provides a calming, non-judgmental companion who helps children feel safer and more comfortable.
Reducing Stress Responses: Interacting with Stuffy can lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and increase oxytocin (often called the "love hormone"), which promotes feelings of calm and connection. Simply petting Stuffy, watching him breathe, or having him nearby can help slow a child's heart rate and reduce physical symptoms of anxiety.
Grounding and Focus: Stuffy gives children something positive to focus on during difficult conversations. Petting his soft fur, holding his paw, or watching his gentle movements can help children stay present and grounded when talking about hard things.
Comfort Without Words: Sometimes words feel too big or too hard. Stuffy offers comfort that doesn't require talking back. He won't judge, won't ask questions, and won't react with shock or sadness. He simply sits with children exactly as they are.
Building Trust and Safety: Stuffy's consistent, calm demeanor helps signal to children that they're in a safe place. His presence can make an unfamiliar environment feel more welcoming and less intimidating, helping children feel brave enough to share their experiences.goes here

Before Your Visit: When you schedule your appointment at CornerHouse, you can let our team know if your child would like to have Stuffy present during their visit. We'll share information about Stuffy with your family so your child knows what to expect. If your child has allergies or fears around dogs, we'll make sure they're comfortable with alternative support options.
During Your Visit: Stuffy may greet your child in our waiting area or meet them in the interview room—whatever feels most comfortable. Children can choose how they'd like to interact with Stuffy: some kids like to pet him, others prefer him to simply lie nearby, and some enjoy talking to him or showing him toys. Stuffy follows his handler's guidance and is trained to remain calm and gentle throughout the visit.
After Your Visit: The comfort Stuffy provides doesn't end when the interview does. Many children remember Stuffy as a positive part of their CornerHouse experience—a friend who helped them feel brave during a difficult time.
