How Kids Are Referred to CornerHouse
Law Enforcement & Child Protection
Police officers and child protection workers are the main referral sources.
When a child discloses abuse, or there is suspicion of abuse, these agencies contact CornerHouse to schedule a forensic interview.
Medical Professionals
Doctors, nurses, or emergency room staff who suspect abuse may also refer cases to CornerHouse.
This ensures that children receive both medical assessment and a safe space to share their experiences.
Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Approach
CornerHouse is part of Hennepin County’s multidisciplinary child abuse response team.
This team includes prosecutors, investigators, medical providers, and advocates who coordinate together.
The MDT ensures that children are interviewed once in a neutral, child‑centered environment, rather than repeatedly by different agencies.
Caregiver Support During Referral
While the interview is happening, caregivers meet with advocates to learn about the process, discuss concerns, and connect with resources.
This helps families feel supported and informed during what can be a very stressful time.
Why This Referral System Matters
Minimizes Trauma: Children don’t have to retell their story multiple times to different professionals.
Ensures Safety: Referrals come from agencies legally responsible for protecting children.
Provides Access to Services: Families are immediately connected to advocacy, therapy, and prevention resources.
