A Message to Our Colleagues Regarding Certification of Forensic Interviewers

In recent months, colleagues have inquired as to CornerHouse’s position on the certification of forensic interviewers. We have been carefully considering the issues and have listened closely to the myriad of professionals in the field who have come forward with opinions, positions and/or ideas.

We appreciate and support this discussion as it gives us and others food for thought; ultimately ensuring, we hope, the best outcomes for the children whom we seek to protect through our collaborative efforts, as well as the professionals we serve in our training programs. At CornerHouse we believe that we must be willing to look at our current practice and assess whether Forensic Interviewer Certification might be an avenue to a better end for children. Specifically, we must ask ourselves: Is professionalizing the field of forensic interviewing through Certification the appropriate next step? Will it truly make a difference for the children we intend to serve? We believe in and are committed to a robust discussion of these questions.

At this time, we are not prepared to endorse or reject Certification or any specific Certification program. The specifics have not yet been fleshed out in terms of what certification can or will mean. Many leaders in the field have already begun to dissect these issues. We appreciate the thoughts of those from NCA and NCAC as posted on the NCA listserv and of the National Child Protection Training Center and the many Think Tanks and meetings held over the last several years by APSAC. We look forward to a continued robust conversation for best outcomes in the field.
